Stained Glass FAQ
1. Are your stained glass pieces handmade?
YES! We make all of our stained glass by hand in our little studio space. Each pieces is hand cut, soldered, and polished by us.
2. What are your pieces made of?
Each piece is handcrafted using high-quality glass, soldered with 60/40 lead material, and includes a chain for hanging.
3. Why is my piece looking a bit dull?
Over time, the solder may naturally dull—this is completely normal. To refresh its shine, apply a small amount of non-abrasive wax (like carnauba wax or stained glass finishing compound) using a soft cloth. Gently buff to restore luster—avoid harsh cleaners or abrasive materials.
4. How do I hang a stained glass piece?
Unless otherwise noted, each piece comes with a secure hanging chain. We recommend placing it in a window for the full effect of the colors and textures. We suggest to hang your piece from a nail or window lock for security. Some may choose to use suction cup hooks; however, be warned that the piece may not be totally secure by that method so use with cautious. You are also more than welcome to lean the piece elsewhere depending on your preference.
5. Is the stained glass piece safe for outside use?
While stained glass can be displayed outdoors for short periods, we highly recommend keeping your piece indoors or in a sheltered area to prevent weather-related damage.
6. Are there any safety concerns?
As with any glass artwork, there is an inherent risk of breakage and sharp edges. To reduce the chance of damage or injury, we strongly recommend securely hanging your piece in a safe location. Additionally, all of our stained glass pieces are currently crafted using lead-based solder. We advise thoroughly washing your hands after handling your piece to minimize any potential exposure.
We are committed to making more of our pieces lead-free in the future. Any projects that are lead-free will be noted in the project description.
7. Are pre-orders available?
Not at this time. If there is interest in a pre-order for any of the particular designs, we may open this option up. We will notify our customers via the website, email newsletter, and social media accounts if/when pre-orders become available.
8. Do you take commissions?
Not at this moment; however, if you would like to discuss a future commission, please email us at info@velvetskullco.com and we can discuss!
